Funny enough, I didn’t choose to cover Zootopia on purpose. As I was planning movies to cover this year, Zootopia just so happened to come up on my randomizer. Although, in light of the sequel announcement and release date set for this November, I think it worked out well. With that being said, how would I describe my feelings about this movie? Overall, I’d say I’m net neutral on it.
I don’t have many strong opinions about it; I’d ultimately say it’s a perfectly serviceable kid’s film. Where it gets more complicated is its message about prejudice. This was not lost on me when I was a kid and it’s abundantly clear as an adult. Looking back, I’m unsure how to tackle this subject as I’m sure Disney was when they were making this movie. Their heart was in the right place, but Disney covering inequality has never felt right to me.
Since Disney consistently projects the image of inclusion while doing the exact opposite behind the scenes, that’s mostly why. I can’t help but feel like whenever they tackle a real-world societal issue there’s some hidden motive behind it. However, what does that mean for Zootopia? Well, it’s been a long time since I’ve seen it, so maybe there’s something I missed. After all, I should try to be fair whenever I can. Just ignore my Jurassic Park reviews.
With that said, let’s hop on a train to the city and try everything to make it in Zootopia.
